Why you are cousins with the oak, the mushroom, and the frog

Trace living cellular lineages backward and they converge on an ancient ancestral population. Shared DNA letters and deeply conserved cellular machinery are clues among many: a bacterium, an oak, a mushroom, and you belong to one branching family, living tangled together still.
