Cortex is a set of nine quick brain games. Kids spot when a picture repeats, copy a pattern of lights, say the ink color instead of the word, remember digits forwards and backwards, and tell a turned shape from its mirror image. Each round is short and gets harder while answers stay correct, so it suits a curious 8-year-old and a teenager alike. It's free and has no ads. Diffy measures product use to improve the service.
What kids learn
- Remembering digits forwards and backwards (Digit Span) and spotting repeats 1, 2 or 3 steps back (N-Back)
- Naming the ink color, not the word, in a Stroop color-word challenge
- Switching between two rules — odd or even, low or high — whenever the cue changes
- Quick same-or-different matching in one-minute Speed Match rounds
- Telling a turned shape from its mirror image, and finding the odd tile out
- Unscrambling letters into real words
How it works
Kids pick a game from a menu of cards. Each game opens with a short how-to-play card, and the clock starts on the first answer. Rounds get harder as answers stay correct — longer spans, higher N, more colors, subtler differences. Each game keeps a best score and awards up to 3 stars; the results screen shows the points needed for the next star and suggests a game to try next.
Kids can play without signing in; guest stars stay until you reload or close the page. A grown-up signs in once and adds a player for each kid, so Cortex's stars and progress save to your account and follow you to any device.
