Data Detective: investigate the evidence behind a claim
Data Detective is an introductory statistics workshop for confident readers, teens and adults. Six activities combine a coached case with a fresh unassisted challenge, using synthetic community-market data. Play the first activity without login; a free grown-up sign-in opens the rest and saves future progress. Diffy measures product use to improve the service.
What kids learn
- Compare conversion rates with unequal denominators
- Calculate means and medians and interpret an outlier
- Allocate a proportional sample and identify selection bias
- Distinguish percentage-point change from relative increase
- Choose a stronger experimental assignment and acknowledge uncertainty
- Apply observed rates to a forecast with explicit limitations
How it works
Inspect tables and interactive charts, construct numerical answers and choose a defensible explanation. Each of six activities has a coached case and a different unassisted case. Three unsuccessful submissions invite a fresh run; successful replays preserve best stars. The final case combines rates, forecasts and uncertainty. Guest practice is temporary. This is introductory practice, not academic credit or validated mastery.
Try the introductory activity without signing in. A grown-up signs in once and adds a player for each kid, so Data Detective's stars and progress save to your account and follow you to any device.
